A MEMORIAL FOR ORDINARY EMOTIONS
VISUAL ART
Based on diverse life experiences, people have different reasons for leaving their country. Some follow their ambitions in a more supportive community, while others try to escape unfavorable situations. Also, many are trying to improve their financial conditions or want to join their loved ones who have already left the country. Some also want to pursue their education to push the boundaries of science. Whatever the reasons, such a big change introduces unprecedented disturbances in one’s life. In this project, I aim to emphasize the stories of Iranian students who moved to the United States. Their stories are worth being listened to, and their identity crises resulting from leaving their families, friends, and all that was familiar to them are worth seeing.
Each artwork incorporates one layer of cyanotype printed on cotton fabric and one layer of sewn typography on sheer fabric. Simultaneously, their stories unfold through a tiny hidden speaker behind the pieces, narrated in English and Farsi.”
