DREAM OF EMBROIDERY
VISUAL ART
Sistan and Baluchistan province is home to one Iranian tribe that experiences discrimination due to religious and geographical situations. This discrimination against Baluch women is significantly stronger because of existing patriarchal beliefs in society that deprived them of their fundamental social rights. The needlework handicrafts, a feminine art in Iran are kept alive and transferred to the next generations by Baluch women, providing them a way to make a living.
In the series, “Dream of Embroidery”, I reference the significance of the needlework tradition in Baluchi culture by embroidering on top of altered, appropriated photographs of the Baluchi people. The effect of the embroidery (knots and ties) can be seen on the backside of the fabric. Each knot bodes the distress and pain of the Baluchi people’s lives. The collection’s purpose is to raise awareness of the sad lives behind the scenes of these beautiful artworks.
